Anthony Whistler (1714-1754), poet, attended Eton College before going to Pembroke College, Oxford in 1732, where he became friends with William Shenstone and Richard Graves. His poem, The Shuttlecock, was published in 1736; the following year, a volume of his poetry was also published. He died in Whitchurch in 1754, at the age of forty.
